Hi guys and gals-

I bought 2 sets of Panama rosewood from Allied lutherie and I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with this wood for back and sides? Does anyone have pictures of this rosewood on a finished guitar? I have emailed one luthier who has built with it and he loves the look, the ease of bending and the sound of it.

These 2 sets are unusual in that there is the yellow spalted color along with the normal dark chocolate brown. Todd said these are the last sets with this coloring. The rest are dark tan or chocolate brown - but still gorgeous zoot. The wood is very light in weight for a rosewood but still as stiff as most rosewoods I've flexed. It has a very clear taptone with a long sustain.

Thanks-

I have not worked with it but the name does remind me of a Frank Zappa song named "Panama Red"...but that was the 70's...

Peter Rowan would like to take exception to your attribution of his song to Zappa

The only version of "Panama Red" that I've heard is on the "Old and In The Way" album, with Rowan and J. Garcia.

One of my all-time favorite albums...... er, CDs. Still listen to it every now and then.

I always assumed Panama rosewood was another regional type of Dalbergia Retusa, or cocobolo.
John, does it smell like coco when you sand it?

You are correct...and you have proved my point that the 70's were a blur for me ... Somewhere were once was a synapse I knew it was Rowan but in that part of my mind it had cross-indexed that title and bit of a memory with Zappa's "Amarillo Brillo"...
